GRAND FORKS, ND – The Grand Forks KnightRiders have named their captains for the 2019-2020 hockey season, according to sixth year head coach Alex Hedlund. The KnightRiders have named senior forward Anna Robinson as their captain, and senior Haily Stenberg, along with juniors Shaley Richards and Hannah Gray as the assistant captains. The team has evaluated last year—and has set lofty goals. “We have all agreed we want more out of this coming season, and I believe this leadership team will help us get there,” Hedlund said. Anna Robinson Robinson, a senior, didn’t see the ice for the KnightRiders last season, after having hip surgery in October. “Anna is a natural leader, who has a passion for the game, and to see her and her teammates succeed. Anna was out all last season after suffering a hip injury last year that resulted in a hip surgery this past October,” Hedlund said. “She was finally able to get a couple shifts in the state tournament, after being cleared a few days prior for game play. Anna worked hard all season to get her strength back, and never missed a practice or game other than for physical therapy.” Hedlund gives credit to Robinson’s experience on the bench last year. “I believe Anna’s experience from the “sideline” last year, and the will to get back on the ice for her senior year, will help her in leading our team,” she said. In 41 career games, Robinson has one goal and four assists for the KnightRiders. Haley Stenberg Stenberg, a senior, appeared in 25 games for the KnightRiders last season, scoring three goals and five assists. In 102 career games, she has 13 goals and 21 assists. “Haily brings her knowledge of our program as this will be her fifth and final season as a KnightRider,” Hedlund said. “Haily has played in a lot of big games over the years for us and has her experience to help lead our squad.” Shaley Richards Richards, a junior, appeared in 25 games for the KnightRiders last season, scoring 13 goals and 17 assists. In 48 career games, she has 14 goals and 19 assists. “(Shaley) Richards is a natural leader,” Hedlund said. “She has a tremendous passion for the game.” Hannah Gray Gray, a junior, appeared in 25 games for the KnightRiders last season, scoring two goals and six assists. In 50 career games, she has three goals and eight assists. “(Hannah) Gray, just like Shaley, is a natural leader,” Hedlund said. “She has a tremendous passion for the game.” By Chris Larson The Grand Forks KnightRiders rallied against Jamestown, but fell to the Blue Jays in overtime. Katelin Petersen's goal at the 10:50 mark of the third period put the KnightRiders ahead 3-2, but Mary Belzer scored less than three minutes later on a goal that sent the KnightRiders and Blue Jays into an overtime period. In the overtime, it was back and forth, but Jamestown's Kylie Mitchell smacked a puck as hard as she could, finding the back of the net and giving Jamestown a big win over the KnightRiders. "Jamestown needed this game and they played like it," head coach Alex Hedlund said. "We had chances but couldn't capitalize." Petersen got the scoring going at the 28 second mark of the first period, before Jamestown racked up two straight goals to give Jamestown the 2-1 lead going into the second period. The second period was a defensive battle, but Grand Forks' Abby Schauer, in her first game back for the KnightRiders, scored at the 13:27 mark of the second to even the score. Jamestown was outshot by the KnightRiders 45-24. The KnightRiders drop to 8-7 in the statewide standings, with a 10-9 overall record. They will face East Grand Forks Monday night in their final non-league game. Then, three straight home games in-league to end the regular season, heading into the State Tournament, which will be held in Fargo. By Chris Larson
The Grand Forks KnightRiders celebrated their parents on Saturday, giving them an extra special reason to leave with smiles, as the KnightRiders blitzed the Mandan Braves 12-1 at Eagles Arena. "Tonight was a good momentum boost for our squad," head coach Alex Hedlund said. "We moved the puck well and made some nice plays." The KnightRiders scored early--and often--in all three periods. By the end of the second period, the KnightRiders held a 9-0 lead. Hannah Gray's goal at the 3:03 mark of the opening period was the eventual game winning goal. Her goal, which made it 2-0, followed Lexi Laframboise's goal at the 41 second mark of the period. Three players had multiple goals for the KnightRiders--Jessica Lee had two in the first period, Emily Becker had two in the second period and Kylie Autrey had one in the second and one in the third. The KnightRiders scored three goals in the first five minutes of the second period to extend their lead to 8-0. Madan's lone goal came at the 4:05 mark of the third period, on a pass from Ashley Patrick to Kali Berg. Emily Benson, Katelin Peterson, Quinn Fournier and Skylarr Boespflug all scored goals for the KnightRiders. "It is nice to see many different girls in the lineup on the stat sheet," Hedlund said. Emilee Ziegler picked up the win in net, stopping 23 of 24 shots faced. "Ziegler made some good saves in net," Hedlund said. The KnightRiders were penalized 11 times for 33 minutes, including Emily Benson's five minute major for boarding at the 10:43 mark of the second period, which included a ten minute misconduct. Mandan was also penalized three times for 17 minutes, including a five minute major for checking from behind to Breanna Helbling, plus a ten minute misconduct, at the 3:56 mark of the third. "It was a penalty heavy game," Hedlund said. "But I thought we did a good job on the penalty kill as well." By Chris Larson
The Grand Forks KnightRiders took on Fargo North-South Tuesday night at the Fargo Coliseum, and it was the Fargo co-op that took away the win 6-2 in conference play. Katelyn Arman's goal at the 8:17 mark of the first period was enough for Fargo North-South, who, with the win, took the season series against the road warrior KnightRiders. Not all was lost in the game, as Morgan Stenseth found the back of the net just 16 seconds into the contest. "We jumped on them quick," head coach Alex Hedlund said. "It was a good first, but we let North-South beat us to pucks, and spent too much time in our house." The KnightRiders' second goal was a Katelin Peterson goal at the 4:27 mark of the middle period. The KnightRiders were held to just 14 shots on goal, with 13 of them coming in the first two periods. Kaylee Baker faced 46 shots in the contest, stopping 40 of them. "Baker saw a lot of pucks," Hedlund said. "We need to decrease that if we see them again." The KnightRiders were penalized five times and allowed one powerplay goal for Fargo North-South. "I thought our penalty kill was solid tonight," Hedlund said. The KnightRiders drop to 9-8 overall, 7-6 in the state standings. They will host Mandan on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Eagles Arena in Grand Forks. Earlier this season, the KnightRiders defeated Mandan, on the road, 4-2. By Chris Larson The Grand Forks KnightRiders may have started slow Saturday afternoon at the MAYSA Arena in Minot, but a hot third period propelled the KnightRiders to a 4-3 victory over Minot. "I thought that was our most complete game yet this season," head coach Alex Hedlund said. "We were down 3-0 early in the third, but not for lack of effort." The Majettes had control of the first two periods and the early minute of the third, but the KnightRiders found their stride, scoring four unanswered goals. "Our forecheck was outstanding today," Hedlund said. Shaley Richard's eighth goal of the season, scored at the 16:09 mark of the final period, was the eventual game winning goal. "(Shaley Richards) had an outstanding performance, scoring the eventual game winner," Hedlund said. Richards also scored at the 4:10 mark of the third, cutting the lead to one goal. Quinn Fournier, who scored her second goal of the season Saturday, got the KnightRiders on the board in the third, on a pass from Richards at the 1:59 mark to cut the lead to 3-1. Two minutes after Richards scored her goal to cut the lead, Morgan Stenseth equalized the score, picking up a pass from Katelin Peterson, making it 3-3. Stenseth is tied for the team lead in goals with teammate Abby Schauer. Schauer and Stenseth have ten goals each. "Stenseth is a machine," Hedlund said. "She gives the same effort day in and day out." Each team was penalized seven times for 14 minutes. The KnightRiders were one-for-four on the powerplay. Stenseth's goal was the lone powerplay goal. Richards' goal at 16:09 of the third was also a special teams goal--a shorthanded goal. Kaylee Baker was in net for the KnightRiders, stopping 26 of 29 shots she faced. "Baker was solid in net," Hedlund said. The KnightRiders edged the Majettes in shots on goal 40-29, powered by a 15-6 advantage in the third period. The KnightRiders move to 7-5 on the conference season, with an overall record of 9-7. The KnightRiders will travel to Fargo North/South on Tuesday for a conference game, before coming home for a conference game against Mandan on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Eagles Arena. By Chris Larson The Grand Forks KnightRiders started a two-game road trip out with a win Friday night, defeating Williston 5-0 on an Olympic size rink. The first goal was the eventual game winning goal, but it didn't come early. "We had a slow start, but did a good job taking care of our chances in the second period," head coach Alex Hedlund said. Both teams combined for nine penalties. "That (penalties) made it hard to keep any flow going," Hedlund said. Kylie Autrey got the scoring started, 5:24 into the first period. A 48 second span in the second period produced a lot of KnightRider offense. With just nine minutes gone in the second, Katelin Peterson came in all alone for a goal, making it 2-0 KnightRiders. 32 seconds later, Shaley Richards found Emily Benson, who scored, making it 3-0. The onslaught continued just 16 seconds later, as Richards found Jessica Lee for her first of two goals on the evening. Lee's final goal, with just under four minutes left in the second period, put things away for the road KnightRiders. Freshman Kendra Nordick stopped all 17 shots she faced in the win for the KnightRiders, who improve to 8-7 overall, 6-5 in the state standings. "She (Nordick) played well with her first shut out," Hedlund said. They will travel to Minot for a game Saturday at 2 p.m., before continuing their road trip Tuesday at Fargo North/South. "We will need to turn it up to the next gear when we play Minot tomorrow," Hedlund said. The KnightRiders will return home Saturday, Jan. 26, when Mandan will come to Eagles Arena for a 2 p.m. faceoff. By Chris Larson
The Grand Forks KnightRiders were able to get back on the win track Monday night in a rescheduled game against Crookston, taking down the Pirates 7-1 at Eagles Arena. "Tonight was a great team win, after some tough games in the past couple of weeks," head coach Alex Hedlund said. Jessica Lee's goal at 13:02 of the second period was the beginning of a six goal onslaught by the KnightRiders. "We started slow, but came out hard in the second and took the game over," Hedlund said. Shaley Richards got the KnightRiders on the board first at the 10:51 mark of the first period, and the Pirates were able to counter less than two minutes later with a goal by Nora Peterson. Morgan Stenseth scored twice, and Kylie Autrey, Skylarr Boespflug and Lauren Robinson each scored once. "It was nice to see six different goal scorers as well,," Hedlund said. For Robinson, it was her first career goal as a KnightRider. "That was a fun way to end the game," Hedlund said. Kendra Nordick finished with 11 saves, and probably one of the biggest plays of the night was by Nordick. Midway through the game, the Pirates were coming down the ice on a breakaway, Nordick came out of her net and stopped the Pirate player from advancing--leaving her net wide open. The freshman goaltender was able to regain things and get back to the net before a Crookston chance came to be. The KnightRiders will head out west this weekend. By Chris Larson
A bus trip to Bismarck Saturday morning ended with the Grand Forks KnightRiders falling to the Bismarck Blizzard 6-1 in North Dakota High School Girls Hockey. A goal by Jessica Lee at the 3:07 mark of the first period is all the KnightRiders could score, as Bismarck knocked off six straight goals, coming away with the win in a pivotal game in the conference schedule. "We played a great first period," Head Coach Alex Hedlund said. "We had Bismarck on their heels." Three Blizzard goals put the Bismarck ladies ahead for good. "We dropped off after the first, and Bismarck elevated their play," Hedlund said. Grand Forks was 0-for-2 on the power play. "We need to be better on the power play against talented teams of this caliber," Hedlund said. "We allowed two shorthanded goals for Bismarck, which is unacceptable." Emilee Ziegler finished with 36 saves on 42 shots for the KnightRiders, who will host Crookston Monday at Eagles Arena, with faceoff scheduled for 7 p.m. By Chris Larson
It was a border battle Tuesday night at the East Grand Forks Civic Center, as the visiting Grand Forks KnightRiders boarded the bus for the short trip to East Grand Forks, Minn., to play their border rivals, the Green Wave, coming up short 5-1 in exhibition play. The Green Wave jumped out to the 4-0 lead five minutes into the third period, before Shaley Richards could find the back of the net to get the KnightRiders on the board, trailing 4-1. "We need to take care of the puck in the house," Head Coach Alex Hedlund said. The nail in the coffin was a penalty shot by East Grand Forks' Madison McDonald with less than two minutes left in the game, which was caused by Maya Tellman's impedment of McDonald towards the net. The KnightRiders' Emilee Ziegler was in net, stopping 23 of 28 shots she faced. "Ziegler did a good job of making the first save," Hedlund said. "But we have to clear the puck before they get the second and third chances." The KnightRiders will be back in action this weekend, on Saturday, as they take on the Bismarck Blizzard in conference play. They'll return home Monday to face non-conference foe Crookston. |
