The Grand Forks KnightRiders had their Crookston Tournament debut pushed back a day due to Blizzard Alex (Hedlund), but when it came down to gametime, the KnightRiders blitzed Park Rapids in a 7-1 rout at the Crookston Sports Center. "We started slow, but turned it on and played some good hockey in our o-zone," Head Coach Alex Hedlund said. "The Park Rapids goalie made some good saves." A goal by Morgan Stenseth was the difference maker. Stenseth put one past the Crookston goalie with just over three minutes to go, putting the KnightRiders ahead, for good, 2-1. That was the first of three goals by Stenseth against Park Rapids. Park Rapids scored first at the 2:09 mark of the first period, a goal by Shailyn Pachel. It was all Grand Forks from there. Grand Forks picked up three powerplay goals in the hockey game. The KnightRiders finish 2018 with a record of 6-4, and a conference record of 5-3. They are tied for third with West Fargo United. The KnightRiders will head to Fargo Davies on Jan. 3 to take on the Eagles, before a non-conference game on Jan. 8 at East Grand Forks. By Chris Larson

By Chris Larson The Grand Forks KnightRiders took to the road Thursday night, taking on I-29 rival West Fargo United (WFU) in their final game before Christmas break, with WFU coming out on top 4-2 at the West Fargo Sports Arena. WFU got on the board with three goals in the first period, making the difference in the hockey game. "We played a flat first period, which put us in too deep of a hole," KnightRider head coach Alex Hedlund said. "We played with passion in the second and third, outshooting West Fargo in both. The first two goals went to WFU, scoring two in the first four minutes. Madison Schoenberg connected with Madison Hjelden at the 2:10 mark of the first period to give WFU the early 1-0 lead. Erin Nowacki made it 2-0 less than two minutes later. The KnightRiders got their first goal of the game at the 5:17 mark of the opening period, when Katelin Peterson found Shaley Richards for the goal, cutting the lead to 2-1. WFU's Hjelden made it 3-1 in favor of the home team at the 11:09 mark of the opening period. KnightRiders' Peterson made it 3-2 at the 15:56 mark of the second period, on a pass from Jessica Lee. "(Katelin) Peterson had a great night with a goal and an assist," Hedlund said. It was Hjelden's hat-trick goal at the 10:12 mark of the third period that put the dagger in the side of the KnightRiders. Grand Forks was outshot by WFU 34-29. Each team picked up six penalties in the game. "We need to stay out of the box against talented teams like West Fargo," Hedlund said. Grand Forks drops to 5-4 overall, and 5-3 in the conference.

A nine-point weekend road sweep was on the line Saturday as the Grand Forks KnightRiders headed into the Starion Sports Complex to take on Mandan in a league game, pulling ahead late and winning 4-2. ”We did a good job of controlling the pace of the game right from the start,” head coach Alex Hedlund said. “We spent the first three minutes on our our zone, and the first time Mandan came down they scored off a deflection in front of the net. Instead of getting down on ourselves we came out harder, and answered back soon after.” Hedlund gave praise for Mandan’s goalie. “Mandan's goalie made some really good saves today,” she said. “I was happy with our net front presence to cause some commotion in front of her,” Hedlund said. “Two of our goals were on odd man rushes, so that was nice to see. Our defensive zone needs to be a little bit better this week, but I was happy with our puck movement, and offensive production.” It was 2-2 head into the early portion of the third period, when Abby Schauer picked up a pass from Morgan Stenseth, and found the back of the net, sending the KnightRiders ahead 3-2. Schauer's goal at the 5:40 mark of the third period turned out to be the game winning goal, as Haily Stenberg secured the game with a goal at the 12:52 mark of the third period. Schauer and Kylie Autrey picked up the early tallies for the KnightRiders, who improved to 5-1 in the conference and overall. Kaylee Baker improved to 2-0, stopping 16 of the 18 shots she faced in the contest. “She (Baker) stood tall, even in the last two minutes during a 5-on-3,” Hedlund said of her goaltender. The Grand Forks KnightRiders took to the road for the first weekend in December, as they traveled to Dickinson on Friday, Dec. 7, to take on the Dickinson Midgets, rolling to a 6-2 win over Dickinson in league play Friday night. A three-goal first period, capped off with three points from Abby Schauer, put the KnightRiders ahead for good. Dickinson's two goals came in the second period. “I thought we did some good things tonight offensively,” Head Coach Alex Hedlund said. “We moved the puck well, and crashed the net hard. We cruised to a 3-0 lead in the first, but Dickinson came out hard in the second to cut the lead to one. I was proud of our perseverance to put the game away in the third.” The Schauer, Stenseth, Richards line was really clicking with Abby (Schauer) scoring three, Shay (Richards) one, and Morgan (Stenseth) one, and sharing assists on the goals. The second period saw two goals by the KnightRiders, giving Grand Forks a 5-2 lead heading into the third period. Hannah Gray got the KnightRiders final goal of the game at the 5:20 mark of the third period. Emilee Ziegler improved to 1-1 on the season, stopping 16 of 18. “Ziegler did some really good things as well,” Hedlund said. The KnightRiders improved to 4-1 with the win. |
