MAYVILLE -- The May-Port-CG Patriots opened the 11-man football season at home Friday night at Jerome Berg Field in Mayville. The Patriots threatened first on a long opening drive, but it was Hillsboro-Central Valley who scored early and often in a 25-0 shutout in the battle of Traill County rivals in the opening week of the 11A football season.
Friday marked the first time May-Port-CG played at the 11-man ranks in several years, having played 9-man football in seasons previous under head coach Adam Sola.
Sola, appearing on the May-Port-CG Boosters Coaches Show on Digital North Media this past Wednesday, said Friday's contest would be a challenge. The Patriots starting quarterback, Walker McGillis, took his first snaps at quarterback this past offseason, having played a lineman position his entire high school career to this point.
The senior showed his strength early, but the Patriot offense struggled and weren't able to put any points on the board.
May-Port-CG is now 0-1 on the regular season, and they'll have an off week this week, before they travel to Rugby on September 1 for another region contest against the Panthers.
